The Tradition of the Johnson Family Reunion: A Little History
On 1 July 2010, Wylie Pierson Johnson (Uncle Wylie) shared the following information about this photo and how we came to celebrate the Johnson Family Reunion as we do today:

Observing the growth on the trees in the picture I think this gathering was probably on Mother's day. Why Mac was not in the picture I do not know. He probably was at his wife's parents home which was only about three miles from Carol Villa. Luke was in Houston and Emily was is Sacramento in 1949.

You know back then they were just called family dinners. A little extra effort was always put into Sunday dinners and Birthday dinners but nothing like the effort that went into the dinners on Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The dinners on those five days were always extra special. The big family gatherings were reduced down to one a year, gravitated to the 4th of July and we started calling them family reunions after Mama and Papa died.

Thank you, Uncle Wylie for sharing this history and thank you, Parley Philip, Jr. for sharing this photo!
