A United Methiodist minister, Walter retired at the mandatory age of 70, had both knees replaced, and went back to work on the staff of Saint James United Methodist Church in Montgomery. "I have the best job a retired preacher ever had because Saint James is one of the finest churches in America. I get to love and encourage the old folks to keep smiling despite the ailments of old age. I know how old folks feel because I am one."

Walter is still preaching but expects he will have to retire again by age 90. He says the government paid his daddy not to plant cotton so he hopes the church will pay him to quit preaching before long. His beloved wife Dean, to whom he has been married 58 years, says she will know when it is time for Walter to hang up his spurs. "The first time he forgets the second point of his sermon, I will walk up to the pulpit, take Walter by the hand and lead him into the sunset."

Walter met Dean in the first grade. After a 14-year engagement they married when they were 20. They have five children: David (deceased), Matthew, Mark, Timothy, and Steve. Their sons and their wives have blessed them with 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Walter and Dean reside at "The Cabin," near Wetumpka, Alabama.

Walter is a graduate of Auburn University (B.S.degree) and Emory University's Candler School of Theology (M.Div.degree).

Walter's wife Dean is the author of two books: The Yellow Butterfly (2010) and Misplaced Heart (1990).
